The ground-dwelling leopard gecko is native to northwest India, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran. In the cold of winter, the gecko will seek shelter and burrow in the ground to brumate. Fortunately, they can survive off of the fat stored in their thick tails. Their tails have many uses. When threatened, the leopard gecko can drop its tail, which distracts the predator and lets the gecko escape. The tail will grow back, although it will be stunted and will not look the same as the original tail.

The leopard gecko gets its name from its beautiful spotted pattern, which is similar to a leopard’s coat. This lizard has a calm nature, which makes it a popular pet.
